If your business doesn't show up on Google Maps, you're invisible to local customers. And if your Google Business Profile (GBP) isn't verified, it might as well not exist.
Verification is the single most important step in claiming your spot on Google. Without it, you can't edit your business information, respond to reviews, or show up in local search results. This guide walks you through the entire verification process — no tech expertise required.
Why Verification Matters
Google doesn't just hand out verified business profiles. They need proof that you actually own or manage the business you're claiming. Once verified, you unlock:
- Control over your business info — hours, phone number, website, photos
- Review management — respond to customer reviews
- Insights and analytics — see how customers find you
- Google Posts — share updates, offers, and events
- Messaging — let customers contact you directly through Google
Without verification, your profile is a ghost listing that you can't touch. Competitors might claim it. Customers might see outdated info. You're leaving money on the table.
Step 1: Claim Your Business Profile
First, you need to claim your profile (if you haven't already).
- Go to business.google.com
- Sign in with the Google account you want to manage the profile with (use a company email, not a personal one)
- Search for your business name
- If it appears, click Claim this business
- If it doesn't appear, click Add your business to Google
Pro tip: Use a Google Workspace account (yourname@yourbusiness.com) instead of a personal Gmail. If you ever leave the company or sell it, you don't want the profile tied to someone's personal account.
Step 2: Choose Your Verification Method
Google offers several verification methods. The one you see depends on your business type, location, and how much Google already knows about you.
Postcard (Most Common)
This is the default for most businesses. Google mails a postcard with a 5-digit code to your business address.
Timeline: 5-14 days (sometimes longer)
How it works:
- Confirm your business address is correct
- Request the postcard
- Wait for it to arrive
- Enter the code in your GBP dashboard
Common issues:
- Wrong address? You can't change it after requesting the postcard. If you entered the wrong address, you'll need to request a new one (and wait again).
- Postcard never arrived? After 14 days, you can request a new one from your dashboard.
- Multiple locations? You'll need a postcard for each one.
Phone Verification (Instant)
Some businesses qualify for instant phone verification. If you see this option, take it — it's the fastest route.
Timeline: Immediate
How it works:
- Enter your business phone number
- Choose Call or Text
- Google sends you a code
- Enter the code in your dashboard
Requirements:
- The phone number must be publicly listed for your business
- The number must match what's on your website and other directories
- Google must have enough confidence in your business data
Note: Not all businesses qualify. If you don't see this option, you'll need to use postcard verification.
Email Verification (Rare)
Google occasionally offers email verification for certain business types (like hotels or chains).
Timeline: Immediate
How it works:
- Google sends a verification link to the email associated with your domain
- Click the link
- Done
Who qualifies: Mostly chains, franchises, and businesses already in Google's system.
Video Verification (For Select Categories)
Google introduced video verification for businesses that can't receive mail (like home-based businesses or service-area businesses).
Timeline: 3-5 business days
How it works:
- Record a short video walkthrough of your business
- Upload it to Google
- Google reviews it manually
- You get verified (or rejected)
Requirements:
- Show your business signage, equipment, or workspace
- Prove you operate from the location you claim
- Follow Google's video guidelines (clear footage, no edits)
Who qualifies: Home-based businesses, service-area businesses, or businesses without a physical storefront.
Bulk Verification (For 10+ Locations)
If you have 10 or more locations, you may qualify for bulk verification through Google's chain verification process.
Timeline: Varies (can take weeks)
How it works:
- Submit your locations via spreadsheet
- Google reviews them manually
- They verify all at once (or request more info)
Who qualifies: Chains, franchises, and multi-location businesses with consistent branding and data.
Step 3: Complete the Verification
Once you've requested verification, here's what happens next.
For Postcard Verification:
- Wait for the postcard. Google typically says 5 days, but it can take up to 14 (or longer in some areas).
- Check your mail daily. The postcard is plain and easy to miss.
- Enter the code. Once it arrives, log into your GBP dashboard, click Verify now, and enter the 5-digit code.
- Done. Your profile is now verified.
What if the code doesn't work?
- Make sure you're entering it exactly as shown (no spaces, check for similar-looking characters like 0 vs O)
- Try refreshing the page and re-entering
- If it still fails, request a new postcard
What if the postcard never arrives?
- After 14 days, you can request a new one from your dashboard
- Check that your address is correct in your GBP settings
- If you moved recently, make sure mail forwarding is set up
For Phone/Email Verification:
- Enter the code immediately. Codes usually expire after a few minutes.
- If the code doesn't work, request a new one.
- Done. Your profile is verified instantly.
For Video Verification:
- Upload your video following Google's guidelines.
- Wait 3-5 business days for Google to review it.
- Check your email for approval or requests for more info.
- Done (or resubmit if rejected).
Step 4: What Happens After Verification
Once verified, your GBP dashboard unlocks. Here's what you should do immediately:
1. Complete Your Profile
- Add/confirm business hours (including holiday hours)
- Upload high-quality photos (logo, cover, interior, exterior, team, products)
- Write a compelling business description
- Add your website and phone number
- Set your service area (if applicable)
2. Choose Your Categories
- Pick the most accurate primary category (this is critical for ranking)
- Add relevant secondary categories (but don't spam — be honest)
3. Enable Messaging (Optional)
- Let customers message you directly through Google
- Make sure someone is monitoring it
4. Turn on Q&A Monitoring
- Customers can ask questions on your profile
- You can answer them (or someone else will)
5. Set Up Review Monitoring
- Get notified when new reviews come in
- Respond quickly (we'll cover this in another guide)
Common Verification Problems (And How to Fix Them)
"I requested a postcard, but it's been 3 weeks"
- Request a new postcard from your dashboard
- Double-check your address is correct
- Contact Google Business Profile support (they're slow, but they can help)
"I entered the code, but it says it's invalid"
- Make sure you're entering it exactly as shown
- Check for typos (0 vs O, 1 vs I, etc.)
- Try refreshing the page
- Request a new postcard if the code is old
"I don't have access to the business location anymore"
- If you moved, update your address before requesting verification
- If you're verifying a previous location, you'll need to request a new postcard at the current address
"Someone else verified my business"
- This happens when a previous owner or employee verified it
- You'll need to request access or ownership transfer
- Go to your GBP dashboard, search for the business, and click Request Access
- The current owner will get a notification to approve or deny
- If they don't respond (or you can't reach them), you'll need to contact Google support
"Google says my business doesn't qualify for a profile"
- Some businesses don't qualify (PO boxes, rental properties, lead-gen sites)
- If you think this is a mistake, appeal through Google support
- Make sure your business has a physical location or serves customers at their location
"I verified my business, but it's not showing up on Google"
- Verification doesn't guarantee immediate visibility
- It can take a few days (or weeks) for Google to index your profile
- Make sure your profile is fully completed (photos, hours, description, categories)
- Check that your business is eligible (Google doesn't list all business types)
Pro Tips for Faster Verification
- Use a Google Workspace email — It builds trust with Google and makes management easier.
- Match your data everywhere — Your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) should be identical across your website, directories, and GBP.
- Don't create duplicate profiles — If you find an existing listing, claim it instead of creating a new one. Duplicates get suspended.
- Verify during business hours — If you qualify for phone verification, do it when you can answer the phone.
- Keep your postcard — If you ever get suspended, Google may ask for it as proof.
What to Do After Verification
Verification is just the beginning. Once you're verified:
- Optimize your photos (see our guide on GBP photo optimization)
- Post regular updates (events, offers, news)
- Monitor and respond to reviews
- Track your insights (how customers find you, where they're coming from)
- Keep your info updated (hours, phone, services)
Your Google Business Profile is one of the most powerful free marketing tools available. But only if you verify it first.
